February 2012

From the Desk of
Elnora Crutchfield, Superintendent
Hello!
We are boldly moving into the second half of our school year. We are continuing to grow in pride, academic excellence and spirit. We have been working hard all year to ensure our students are achieving at higher levels.
We are just completing the winter Scantron testing, but it’s still very critical that your son or daughter prepare for their grade promotions. Take a few moments to talk with him/her about the importance of their work and remind them to do quality school and homework. They must also be reminded to read daily. With all of us continuing to work together, your child will continue to make good progress. We still need more parental involvement in our meetings, classes and committees.
If you have any concerns about any aspect of your son or daughter’s schooling, feel free to contact the school to set up an appointment to visit with your child’s teachers. We welcome your inquiries.
Please continue to remind your child of the dress code. As we prepare students to go into the future, we stress appearance as a first step to success.
Also, please visit our new and improved web site at www.academyofflint.com to view our school calendar as well as our staff list with current email addresses.
Warmest Regards,
Elnora Crutchfield

The Stinger News
Parent Corner
January got off to a great start for the AOF students, staff and families. The winter weather has been kind so far and let’s hope that it will continue. Throughout the month, students have been completing the Winter Scantron tests in the areas of Reading, Math and Science; with many students making significant academic gains in these core content areas. Parents are asked to continue to encourage and support your students by getting your children to school each day and in uniform clothing, helping with homework and communicating with teachers.

Parent Meeting/Dinner
The Parent Meeting and Dinner on Thursday, January 19, 2012 was a great success! Approximately three hundred (300) parents, children, grandparents, Board Members, staff and community partners packed the gymnasium for two hours. Mr. Hall, Board President and Mr. Warren, Vice President, presented AOF’s position on the issue of anti-bullying and discussed the Michigan Department of Education’s anti-bullying policy.
Special thank you goes out to Mr. Wilson, Mt. Morris Twp. Trustee shared with students and parents about his personal experiences growing up in the south. Sharing the spotlight with him was Mrs. Diane Bayeh, treasurer for Mt. Morris Twp. And her daughter, Vikki Bayeh-Haley, Assistant Prosecuting attorney who shared with students strategies for avoiding the criminal justice system and staying in school.
Each school district is now mandated by law to have a proactive policy in place to address the issue of bullying in our schools. Here at the Academy of Flint, several initiatives are in place to create a safe and serene environment for our students. Finally, each student received an activity book that focused on bullying and interactive learning activities that entertained and hopefully got students thinking about bullying. __________________________________________________________________

After School Program & Day Counseling
Academy of Flint has established community partnerships with two of Genesee County’s best mental health agencies to provide after school programming and day counseling.
Institute for Proactive Strategies, Inc. will provide interactive educational sessions that will allow students to practice and model strategies and techniques learned. Parenting workshops will be provided on Saturdays in March and April along with educational services for our middle school students.
Recco Richardson Consulting Inc. has been on campus conducting Educational intervention groups that address topics such as anger/stress management, conflict resolution and leadership skills with our students (K-8th). Dr. Recco Richardson is on campus daily with his staff to consult students that have been referred for counseling and has received parental written permission. Consults are provided as needed in crisis situations.
AOF is elated to have both agencies on board and we look forward to working with them for the remainder of the school year.
Who is Homeless?
What does Homeless Mean?
The term homeless children and youth means individuals who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence. It also includes children and youth who are sharing the housing of other persons due to loss of housing, living in public places, cars, parks, abandoned buildings, busing or train stations, or similar setting. If you are aware of any of our students meeting the definition of homeless, please contact Mrs. Knight, Homeless Liaison at (810) 789-9484.
